The software company Databricks is expanding its research and development presence in the Netherlands by taking eleven floors in The Rock office tower on Amsterdam’s Zuidas. The move aims to grow the local workforce to around 1,000 employees and cements Amsterdam’s role as the company’s largest European development hub.
The new Amsterdam location, offering approximately 13,000 m² of office space, is intended to support Databricks’ expanding activities across the Benelux region. Amsterdam was the company’s first research and development site outside the United States and remains strategically significant. The technological foundation of Databricks is partly rooted in research conducted at the Centrum voor Wiskunde en Informatica in Amsterdam. This historical connection underlines why the city continues to play a central role in the company’s global operations and in attracting top technical talent.
Unlike some other large AI players, Databricks does not primarily focus on building its own models. Instead, it provides underlying data infrastructure that enables organisations to organise, analyse and utilise data effectively for AI applications across different models and cloud environments. This infrastructure‑first approach has become increasingly important as structured data access and governance become prerequisites for successful AI adoption.
Databricks serves a range of notable Dutch customers including ABN AMRO, ASML, Heineken, Shell and UMC Utrecht, with use cases spanning logistics optimisation to fraud detection. The expansion follows recent funding rounds exceeding $7 billion and a valuation of around $134 billion, underlining the company’s rapid growth.
The move to The Rock is scheduled for late 2026 and reinforces Amsterdam’s position as a key European hub for data and AI innovation. The city’s robust digital infrastructure and access to global tech talent continue to make it an attractive location for international technology firms.
