Antoni van Leeuwenhoek receives green light for digital healthcare transformation

Health & Care

The Antoni van Leeuwenhoek (AVL) has received approval from health insurers Zilveren Kruis and CZ for its IZA transformation proposal. This approval enables the hospital to invest in technological and organizational innovations that ensure cancer care remains accessible, affordable, and of high quality.

With €17 million in funding, AVL is taking a major step toward a digital transformation in oncology care. “One in two Dutch citizens will face cancer at some point, and the demand for oncology care continues to grow,” said Maurice van den Bosch, Chair of the Executive Board. “This approval allows us to better organize cancer care — to meet rising demand while maintaining a positive work environment for healthcare professionals.”

The transformation focuses on four key areas:

  1. Supporting shared decision-making – aimed at providing appropriate care and asking: does everything that can be done, need to be done?
  2. Efficient diagnostics and personalized treatment – including AI applications in radiology and radiotherapy.
  3. Care at home where possible (‘digital, unless’) – through hybrid care pathways, home monitoring, and video consultations.
  4. Reducing administrative workload and automating processes – by applying digitalization, AI, and robotics to save time for healthcare providers.

By integrating e-health, AI, and data-driven applications, AVL aims to ease pressure on healthcare, streamline processes, and improve quality. This initiative aligns with the goals of the National Healthcare Agreement (IZA) and strengthens Antoni van Leeuwenhoek’s position as a leader in innovative, human-centered cancer care.
