New AI tool improves quality of 113 counselling

Salim Salmi, a mathematician from the Centrum Wiskunde & Informatica, developed an AI tool to assist counselors at 113 Zelfmoordpreventie in their chat conversations with individuals at risk of suicide. The tool analyzes chat interactions and suggests ways to guide the conversation, based on successful past cases.

After extensive testing with counselors, the tool showed positive results, particularly in challenging conversations where counselors were unsure how to proceed. The next step is to expand the tool’s capabilities to phone conversations.

Salmi, who will defend his PhD dissertation on December 4, 2024, at Vrije Universiteit Amsterdam, is now working on integrating the AI tool into the 113 platform.
