The Netherlands Cancer Institute invites applications from junior scientists who wish to start their own independent research group. The call targets researchers whose work complements the institute’s cancer-focused portfolio and contributes new perspectives and expertise.

Particular interest lies in immunology, chemical biology, AI in biology and protein design. This reflects the growing role of computational approaches and artificial intelligence in understanding biological systems and developing novel therapies.

The NKI is internationally recognised for its fundamental, translational and clinical cancer research. Its research infrastructure includes advanced facilities for genomics, bioimaging, flow cytometry, mass spectrometry and animal models, as well as access to extensive patient data and clinical trial support.

Junior group leaders are offered full scientific independence to develop and execute their research programme. The support package includes the group leader’s salary, funding for at least one additional position and, where external funding is not yet secured, temporary financial support for additional staff. The position is offered for five years, with a tenure evaluation at the end of the term.

The institute emphasises its open and collaborative culture, with approximately 650 scientists and research support staff working in an international environment. Applications from candidates of diverse genders and nationalities are explicitly welcomed.

Online interviews with selected candidates will take place on 26 May 2026; the second round of on-site interviews is scheduled for 18 and 19 June 2026.
