Thousands of city employees use ChatAmsterdam: internal AI assistant supports daily work

Increasingly, employees at the City of Amsterdam are using ChatAmsterdam, the municipality’s own AI assistant. The digital tool helps staff with daily tasks such as writing texts and summarizing information, while keeping sensitive data secure within municipal systems.

Since May 2025, municipal employees have been submitting nearly 3,000 questions per month to ChatAmsterdam on average. The system is specifically designed for internal use and assists staff with a wide range of tasks, including drafting documents, summarizing information clearly, and understanding complex materials.

According to Alderman Alexander Scholtes, responsible for digitalisation and ICT, AI can help employees perform their work better but must be implemented responsibly. With ChatAmsterdam, the city retains control over documents and data, ensuring that sensitive information does not end up with commercial providers.

Currently, around 7,650 employees are registered for ChatAmsterdam, with approximately 2,800 using the assistant actively. About 1,000 staff members work with it more than two days per week. Usage is growing by ten to fifteen percent each month.

Employees report that ChatAmsterdam helps them produce texts faster, summarize information more clearly, and better understand complex documents. This frees up time for other tasks, including personal interaction with residents. Staff can also take training sessions on responsible use of digital tools.

The municipality continues to improve ChatAmsterdam. It evaluates which digital systems are safe and suitable for government use using its own assessment framework. Factors such as reliability, energy consumption, and transparency regarding costs and data sources are taken into account. The results of these evaluations are shared publicly.

Amsterdam also shares the knowledge gained from using ChatAmsterdam with other municipalities. The city aims to contribute to the safe and responsible use of digital technology in public organizations and serve as an example for other governments.
