VU investigates how smartphones and digital tools impact reading and writing skills in students.
A recent study by Vrije Universiteit Amsterdam reveals that approximately one-third of young people are functionally illiterate. While not traditional illiteracy, this condition means they struggle to comprehend longer or more complex texts, such as newspapers or manuals. This trend coincides with the rise of smartphones, suggesting a potential link between increased screen time and reduced literacy skills.
The research, led by organizational scientist Hille Bruns, aims to explore how technology affects reading and writing abilities. The study will involve eight student groups completing assignments in various formats: on paper, digitally, or with AI assistance. The goal is to identify how different mediums influence literacy and to provide recommendations for adapting education to these changes.
