Artificial intelligence is rapidly transforming society and the labour market. In its advisory report AI and Work – Towards a Working Future with AI, the SER argues that these technologies hold great promise, but only if implementation is people-centred.

SER chair Kim Putters warns that organisations must act now, in collaboration with their employees. “The choices we make today will determine whether AI contributes to shared prosperity or leads to inequality and pressure on workers.”

The SER outlines four key recommendations:

Put people and decent work first

AI will reshape work. Companies should involve employees early and focus on human dignity, agency, training and oversight.

Government: take the lead in equity and security

Governments must monitor how AI impacts employment and income, and ensure fair distribution of benefits and opportunities.

Commit to lifelong learning

Joint efforts in training and upskilling are crucial. Employers and governments must support digital literacy for all.

Invest in innovation and EU collaboration

To remain competitive, the Netherlands needs strong public-private investment in AI research and infrastructure, especially to support SMEs.
