One in three women experiences menstrual problems caused by conditions such as endometriosis, fibroids, or uterine scarring. Despite this prevalence, it often takes eight to eleven years before a correct diagnosis is made and appropriate treatment begins. The FEMCURE project aims to drastically shorten this timeline by developing new diagnostic tools and therapies.

As part of the program, researchers are developing self-tests and a mobile app that allow women to monitor symptoms at home. At the same time, new methods are being designed to help general practitioners and gynaecologists identify these conditions earlier, including the use of AI-supported ultrasound. In hospitals, advanced imaging techniques such as contrast-enhanced ultrasound will provide more detailed insights, enabling more accurate diagnoses and treatment decisions.

The project also focuses on improving treatment options. Current approaches, including hormone therapy and surgery, often do not address underlying causes and may not align with patients’ fertility preferences. FEMCURE is therefore developing non-hormonal therapies targeting disease mechanisms such as abnormal blood flow, as well as localized drug delivery to reduce side effects.

AI will further support personalized care by combining data from imaging, biomarkers, and digital tools to predict which treatments are most effective for individual patients. This marks a shift toward more tailored and data-driven healthcare.

The societal impact of menstrual disorders is significant, with billions of euros lost annually due to healthcare costs and absenteeism. FEMCURE brings together hospitals, research institutions, technology partners, and patient organizations to improve women’s healthcare and accelerate the implementation of innovations.
