Looking Back: Amsterdam AI Thesis Award 2024 Highlights

On December 12, 2024, we celebrated the winners of the Amsterdam AI Thesis Award 2024 during our Amsterdam AI Highlights Event. The event brought together top researchers and AI professionals to honor the thesis work of the students!

The winners, selected for their exceptional research and innovative contributions, were:

1. Mana Douma (Vrije Universiteit Amsterdam)

  • Thesis: “Modeling Complex Cases of Heteroscedasticity with Polynomial Regression”
  • Supervisor: Emma Beauxis-Aussalet

2. Puck Voorham (Universiteit van Amsterdam)

  • Thesis: “Constraint-based causal discovery for interpretable machine learning in medical diagnostics”
  • Supervisor: Dean McHugh

3. Oline Ranum (Universiteit van Amsterdam)

  • Thesis: “3D Awareness, Geometry & Linguistics in Neural Sign Language Representations”
  • Supervisor: Floris Roelofsen

4. Walter Simoncini (Universiteit van Amsterdam)

  • Thesis: “FUNGI: Features From Unsupervised Gradients”
  • Supervisors: Spyros Gidaris, Andrei Bursuc, en Yuki Asano

 

The winners shared a 1 minute pitch of their research with the audience, showcasing their work in areas such as medical diagnostics, AI models for sign language, and unsupervised learning. Their presentations not only highlighted the diverse and impactful nature of AI research but also inspired the next generation of students.

We organize The Amsterdam AI Thesis Award to promote new AI students, AI research, encouraging diversity, and fostering collaboration within the AI and Data Science communities. This year, we were especially proud to see a diverse range of winners, furthering our goal of making AI accessible to all and empowering underrepresented groups.

We reflect on the success of the Amsterdam AI Highlights Event, we look forward to continuing this tradition in the years to come, supporting young talent, and advancing the Amsterdam AI ecosystem.
