Amsterdam-based Nebius acquires American AI startup EigenAI for $643 million

Service Sector

Amsterdam-based cloud company Nebius has reached an agreement to acquire American startup EigenAI for more than $643 million, comprising $98 million in cash and the remainder in Nebius shares. EigenAI, a company with just twenty employees, develops technology that enables Nvidia chips to operate more efficiently, making it a strategic asset for Nebius as it expands its AI infrastructure offering.

Nebius operates data centres and provides cloud services to technology companies, including Microsoft, to support growing AI capacity. According to co-founder and chief business officer Roman Chernin, speaking to BNR, the addition of EigenAI’s technology will allow Nebius to improve its processes and offer clients better and more affordable services. Despite its small size, EigenAI already works with prominent organisations including OpenAI, Meta and Nvidia.

Nebius is headquartered in Amsterdam but has Russian origins, having separated from Russian internet provider Yandex in 2024. The acquisition of EigenAI reflects the company’s broader ambition to strengthen its position in the market for AI infrastructure and cloud services.
