AI compass guides responsible adoption in primary care

Health & Care

AI adoption in healthcare is accelerating, but clear guidance on how to apply it remains limited. A new AI Compass from AIC4NL aims to support professionals and policymakers in navigating this transition.

The “AI Compass for Primary and Community Care” outlines how artificial intelligence can contribute to more accessible and efficient healthcare. Developed by the AI Coalition for the Netherlands in collaboration with the Ministry of Health, Welfare and Sport, the document is based on research and expert input from across the sector.

According to the report, AI is already being applied in daily healthcare practice. Use cases include automated documentation of consultations, digital triage systems, and diagnostic support tools. These applications can reduce administrative workload and allow healthcare professionals to spend more time with patients.

The compass also highlights the growing role of AI in prevention and personalized care. Through apps, wearables, and data analysis, patients gain more insight into their health, while clinicians receive additional support in decision-making.

At the same time, the report identifies key barriers to wider adoption. Healthcare professionals report a need for clearer regulation, better understanding of AI systems, and improved digital infrastructure. Fragmentation, lack of standards, and limited data exchange continue to slow down implementation.

To address these challenges, the compass outlines several recommendations, including investing in AI literacy, improving interoperability, and strengthening national coordination. It also stresses the importance of using validated medical sources when deploying AI tools in clinical settings.

The AI Compass is designed as a living document that will be updated regularly to reflect rapid developments in the field. It aims to support a more structured and future-proof integration of AI in primary healthcare.
