Netherlands Cancer Institute integrates whole genome sequencing into standard cancer care

Health & Care

Whole genome sequencing (WGS) is rapidly transforming cancer diagnostics. The Netherlands Cancer Institute (NKI) has now integrated this technology into routine clinical care, marking a significant step in the application of advanced genetic analysis for cancer patients.

Research from the Department of Pathology at the NKI shows that whole genome sequencing is not only technically feasible in a clinical setting, but also delivers meaningful impact for patients with solid tumors. The technology enables comprehensive mapping of the entire genome of tumor cells, potentially leading to more accurate diagnoses and better tailored treatments.

The integration of WGS into standard cancer care marks a shift from innovation to everyday practice. Where this technology was previously deployed primarily in research settings, it is now being applied as part of the regular diagnostic process at the NKI. This provides clinicians with more extensive genetic information on which to base treatment decisions.
