The University of Amsterdam (UvA) has appointed Stevan Rudinac as Professor of Artificial Intelligence for Business at the Amsterdam Business School (ABS), within the Business Analytics section. The appointment takes effect on 1 May 2026 and follows a career that Rudinac has built at the UvA since 2013.
Stevan Rudinac has been affiliated with the Amsterdam Business School since 2017, where he held positions as assistant professor and subsequently associate professor within the Business Analytics section. His research focuses on multimedia information retrieval, computer vision, machine learning and information retrieval. At the core of this work is making large multimedia collections accessible and extracting insights by analysing visual content in conjunction with associated text, automatically generated metadata, and information about users and their social networks. He applies these methods in domains including urban computing, business and security.
Rudinac studied Electrical Engineering at the University of Belgrade, completing a five-year integrated programme known for its strong technical specialisation. He then obtained his PhD in Computer Science in 2013 from Delft University of Technology, specialising in multimedia information retrieval. Following his doctorate, he joined the UvA as a postdoctoral researcher at the Informatics Institute before moving to the ABS. He has also worked as a researcher at the University of Belgrade, Eindhoven University of Technology and the Netherlands Forensic Institute.
Within the UvA, Rudinac holds several scientific leadership roles. He serves as scientific director of the Multimedia Information Retrieval for Business lab, an interfaculty collaboration between UvA Economics and Business and the Institute for Informatics of the Faculty of Science. This lab forms part of a broader UvA initiative focused on AI Technology for People. He is also Co-Principal Investigator of the UvA Data Science Centre HAVA-Lab, which conducts research on Human-Aligned Video AI.
His work has been highlighted twice during the UvA’s opening of the academic year, in September 2018 and September 2025, and played a prominent role during the Amsterdam 750 anniversary celebrations. Rudinac has received multiple teaching awards for his courses in machine learning, deep learning and algorithms and data structures, including the Van der Schroeff Award for best lecturer at UvA Economics and Business (2020) and the UvA Economics and Business Lecturer of the Year award (2021).
In terms of conference organisation, he recently served as General Chair of the 30th International Conference on Multimedia Modeling (MMM’24) and the 16th ACM International Conference on Multimedia Retrieval (ACM ICMR’26), and as Technical Program Chair of the 33rd ACM International Conference on Multimedia (ACM Multimedia 2025) and the 32nd International Conference on Multimedia Modeling (MMM’26).
