The Dutch Research Council (NWO) has awarded Vidi grants (up to €850,000 per project) to 26 researchers at UvA and Amsterdam UMC. A key share targets artificial intelligence. Below are the most relevant AI-focused awards and why they matter.
Together, these projects reinforce a coherent AI programme: trustworthy and explainable systems, energy-efficient modelling, legal frameworks and societal embedding.
Dr Sara Magliacane (Informatics Institute) – Methods for AI to learn intended, interpretable concepts from few labels and to use them safely in decision-making, addressing explainability, robustness and data efficiency.
Dr Pascal Mettes (Informatics Institute) – HyperVision: re-architects computer-vision networks with hyperbolic geometry to model hierarchies correctly, tackling a core limitation of current Euclidean designs.
Dr Iris Groen (Informatics Institute) – “The TikTok brain”: integrates high-resolution neuro-measurements with deep networks using bio-inspired principles to enable more energy-efficient video AI.
Dr Claire Stevenson (Psychology Research Institute) – Develops intelligence assessment methods suited to both humans and AI, informing safe, real-world AI use.
Dr João Quintais (IViR, Law) – GenAI content-moderation regulation: a principled EU framework safeguarding fundamental rights and bridging platform and AI rules.
Dr Mahsa Shabani (Law Centre for Health and Life) – Fairness in medical AI and genomics: multidimensional normative framework and regulatory solutions to reduce bias and improve quality and safety in healthcare AI.
Collectively, these lines of work strengthen Amsterdam’s position at the intersection of technical excellence (vision, efficiency, intelligence measurement) and public values (explainability, fairness, legal protection), aligning with the city’s ecosystem for responsible, human-centred AI.
