Amsterdam Public Health (APH) held the sixth edition of its annual APH Junified event on 18 June 2026, gathering early and mid-career researchers for an afternoon focused on the theme ‘Boost your AI skills – Thriving as a researcher in the age of AI’. The event took place at Hotel CASA in Amsterdam and ran from 13:00 to 18:00.
APH vice director Jeroen Lakerveld guided participants through the afternoon programme. The plenary session opened with an introduction to the Amsterdam Center for AI & Health (AmsCAIH), the AI and health centre within APH, presented by Prof. Martijn Schut. Schut then delivered a keynote titled “Hidden in plain text: Using AI on general practice notes to detect lung cancer earlier”, exploring how AI applied to general practice notes can support earlier detection of lung cancer. The plenary session closed with an energizer led by Jozien Vedder, Fit for the Job ambassador.
Following the plenary, participants took part in one of three interactive workshops. Workshop A, led by Bram Kreuger, focused on AI-assisted literature research in practice, making use of tools such as Elicit, Consensus, Semantic Scholar and Perplexity. Workshop B, led by dr. Astrid de Wind and Max Tijhuis, addressed the responsible use of AI in occupational and public health. Workshop C, led by Inge Dekker, centred on communication visualisation and drawing as a tool for communication.
The event concluded with a quiz, prizes, and networking drinks, providing participants with opportunities to connect and exchange experiences. The 2026 edition contributed to strengthening AI skills among researchers within APH.
