Amsterdam startup Waving raises €2.6 million for AI-powered WiFi sensing

AI is increasingly moving beyond screens and into the physical world. Amsterdam-based startup Waving has raised €2.6 million to further develop technology that uses WiFi signals and AI to detect human presence, even through walls.

Waving operates at the intersection of AI and sensing technology. Its system uses existing WiFi signals to detect movement and human presence by analyzing how signals reflect and change in an environment. Combined with AI models, this enables real-time detection without relying on cameras or direct line of sight.

The implications are significant. Traditional security systems such as cameras, infrared sensors, and radar often struggle with blind spots, weather conditions, or false alarms. They also raise privacy concerns and depend heavily on human monitoring. Waving’s approach introduces an additional, invisible layer of sensing that works across walls, objects, and complex environments.

The funding will be used to further develop the technology and expand testing in real-world environments. Early pilots are already underway at Amsterdam Airport Schiphol and with the Dutch Ministry of Justice and Security, focusing on improving the protection of critical infrastructure.

These use cases highlight a broader shift. As geopolitical tensions and infrastructure risks increase, demand is growing for smarter, more resilient security systems. AI is playing a central role, not only in analyzing data but also in enabling new forms of sensing that were previously not possible.

Beyond security, the technology points toward a wider field of “spatial intelligence” where environments can be understood and monitored without cameras. Potential applications include smart buildings, healthcare monitoring, and emergency response scenarios.

For Amsterdam, this development reflects the strength of its deep tech ecosystem. Startups like Waving show how AI innovation is not only about software, but also about redefining how we interact with the physical world.
