We asked ChatGPT to reflect on its values
ChatGPT's commitment to public values: exploring the importance of ethics, transparency, diversity, and accountability in the development and use of AI.
ChatGPT has been making headlines for weeks, with articles ranging from concerns about the potential loss of jobs to the danger of ChatGPT's ability to convincingly lie. Max Kortlander, who works at Waag Futurelab, asked ChatGPT about its values and how they aligned with public values such as openness, fairness, and inclusivity. ChatGPT responded by suggesting several ways to ensure AI is developed and used in accordance with public values, including developing and promoting ethical guidelines, fostering transparency and explainability, encouraging diverse participation, emphasizing accountability, supporting research and education, and fostering public dialogue. When asked whether ChatGPT itself was developed and used in accordance with these values, it said that OpenAI had taken several steps to ensure its models aligned with widely accepted values and principles, but that there is always room for improvement. Finally, when asked in what ways it is not open, fair, and inclusive, ChatGPT responded that, as an AI model trained on a large dataset of text, it is subject to the limitations of that data and that improving the fairness and inclusivity of AI-systems is an ongoing process that requires continuous monitoring and improvement.
