Responsible AI: A Collaborative Effort

How can AI be developed in a way that avoids discrimination and excessive energy consumption, but instead benefits society? This is the central question of a large national AI initiative housed at the Informatics Institute of the University of Amsterdam (UvA). In collaboration with companies and (semi-)government institutions, the initiative focuses on responsible AI solutions for societal challenges such as food waste, cancer treatments, and combating discrimination.

The UvA collaborates with companies like Ahold to improve AI-driven logistics and reduce food waste. Together with the Netherlands Cancer Institute, they work on precision treatments for cancer patients. The UvA also partners with the Municipality of Amsterdam and the Ministry of the Interior to reduce biases in AI systems, aiming to prevent discrimination based on ethnicity, address, or skin color.

These research projects are carried out within the Innovation Center for Artificial Intelligence (ICAI), a network of knowledge institutions, businesses, governments, and non-profits. ICAI, founded by the UvA and VU in 2018, now includes eighteen academic institutions and over 145 partners. PhD candidates collaborate with external partners and gain access to valuable data, enabling research on AI with societal impact.

Each ICAI lab is focused on creating societal impact, aligned with the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs), such as the energy transition. Labs from the NWO ROBUST program, which aims to develop reliable AI systems, are also housed within ICAI.

The Netherlands plays a leading role in responsible AI worldwide and ranks first in the Global Index on Responsible AI. Universities like UvA, with a strong foundation in AI research since the 1980s, continue to contribute to innovative and responsible AI solutions.
