AI pilots TLC Science: generative AI in academic education

The University of Amsterdam has launched a new project through its Teaching & Learning Centre Science, exploring how Generative AI, like ChatGPT, can enhance academic education. This pilot program at the Faculty of Science tests and evaluates various applications of GenAI in higher education.

With the rise of Generative AI, the University of Amsterdam’s Teaching & Learning Centre Science launched a pilot program where ChatGPT plays a central role in the educational process. Over the course of a year, the Faculty of Science is exploring various applications of GenAI and its added value in higher education.

The project aims to effectively use ChatGPT to enrich the student learning experience within a secure cloud environment that protects user privacy. Videos will be added throughout the year, showcasing the different pilots and offering insights into the future potential of AI in education.

Highlights from the GenAI pilots include:

  • Debating with GPT's at AUC: Students practice debating skills with various Custom GPTs, each representing a different ideological perspective.
  • GenAI as a Writing Coach in BSc Biomedical Sciences: ChatGPT assists students with their mini-thesis, focusing on the responsible use of AI in writing and research.
  • Privacy Considerations in BSc Informatics: Students compare multiple LLM models to see how AI can support them in programming and writing assignments.

This project demonstrates how Generative AI can contribute to personalized and practical learning opportunities for students. Through these pilots, UvA gathers valuable insights for future AI use in education.
