Toward a national computing facility for AI
In the article featured in I/O magazine, Geert-Jan Houben from TU Delft and Cees Snoek from the University of Amsterdam highlight the current shortcomings of the Netherlands in computing infrastructure for AI. They emphasize that despite substantial investments in AI research, such as through the AiNed Growth Fund and the ROBUST programs, the Netherlands still lacks the infrastructure needed to fully utilize collected data and remain independent from major American tech companies.
The pair propose a national initiative to develop a GPU-based supercomputing facility that would be essential for processing data required for generative AI applications. This would not only advance scientific progress but also significantly enhance the innovative capacity of Dutch companies.
Houben and Snoek have already taken steps to raise awareness about this issue within the scientific community, industry, and government. They plan to form a strong alliance of partners, including AiNed, SURF ICAI, and TNO, to develop a concrete investment plan.
