The Symbiotic City now on display in ARTIS-Groote Museum

The Symbiotic City presentation is now on display in the ARTIS-Groote Museum. This exhibition envisions a future Amsterdam where nature and people coexist in harmony. The project, initiated by Remco Kort, a microbiologist at the Vrije Universiteit Amsterdam and ARTIS-Micropia professor, uses AI to visualize the collective insights from various disciplines gathered during The Symbiotic City workshop.

The Symbiotic City presentation at the ARTIS-Groote Museum showcases a vision of a future Amsterdam where nature and the city coexist in harmony. This project, initiated by Remco Kort, a microbiologist at the Vrije Universiteit Amsterdam and ARTIS-Micropia professor, brings to life a vision of iconic locations in Amsterdam redesigned with the help of AI.

During The Symbiotic City workshop, local policymakers, urban ecologists, academics, architects, students, and artists collaborated to envision the city from various idealistic future scenarios. Thanks to Visual Methodologies Collective, these visions have been summarized in AI-generated images. The exhibition features, among other things, a Royal Palace of Amsterdam with lush green roofs, green corridors for birds, insects, and mammals along the Herengracht, a protected area for migratory birds on the site of a large parking lot, and Central Station as a green hub for all human and animal travelers.

Remco Kort emphasizes the importance of interdisciplinary collaboration and the use of AI in designing a future city. He notes that the next step is to explore with the network of architects, urban ecologists, and local policymakers what can actually be achieved and what steps are necessary to realize these visions.

The AI presentations, along with the original texts and drawings, are on display at the ARTIS-Groote Museum from June 21 to September 1, 2024.
