Founder of Nu.nl launches a news website made entirely by AI
Artificial intelligence (AI) is transforming the news industry as we know it. At Nu.nl, the founder, Merien ten Houten, has made this vision a reality with the launch of 'The Illustrated Artificial Intelligence' (DGKI). This means it is no longer science fiction, but has become an intriguing reality in which AI not only collects, selects and writes news, but even produces vivid images to bring stories to life.
In a recent article published by Laurens Verhagen in De Volkskrant, Ten Houten discusses the revolutionary concept of DGKI. The idea behind this website originated from the ambition to create a fully autonomous journalistic process, from selecting and weighing sources to writing and publishing news articles. With the help of AI, all these steps are automated, resulting in a unique approach to news reporting.
DGKI, as described by Ten Houten, is more of an experimental playground than a finished product. It offers an intriguing, yet potentially alarming insight into the future of news provision. While Google is already inundated with AI-generated sites, DGKI sets itself apart by simulating a classic news website, complete with various sections and illustrations.
But what about the reliability and originality of the content? Ten Houten emphasizes that DGKI is based on a secure system that relies solely on AI for language proficiency, not for knowledge. The content is gathered from various sources, with source citations provided for each article to enable verification. However, flawlessness is not guaranteed, prompting Ten Houten to continually work on improvements.
