OLVG West accelerates MRI scans with AI technology

The OLVG West hospital in Amsterdam utilizes artificial intelligence to perform MRI scans faster and more accurately, contributing to reduced waiting lists and improved patient care.

OLVG West hospital in Amsterdam has become the first hospital in the city to install an advanced MRI scanner that utilizes artificial intelligence (AI). This technology enables the hospital to perform MRI scans significantly faster and with greater precision. A knee MRI that previously took 25 minutes now takes approximately 10 minutes. This not only reduces the burden on patients but also allows for more scans to be conducted daily, helping to reduce waiting lists.

The new AI-equipped scanner provides more detailed images with less noise, allowing radiologists to make better diagnoses. Additionally, patients can choose a calming background during the scan, such as a vineyard or bamboo forest, enhancing their comfort.

Radiologist Debbie Duyndam highlights the significance of this technological advancement: “We can really make great strides. Where we used to do a knee in 25 minutes, we are now around 10 minutes.” MRI technician Marjan Zwart adds: “The advent of AI is truly a major change in the MRI world.”

This development demonstrates how AI can contribute to more efficient and effective medical care, benefiting both patients and healthcare providers.
