Amsterdam strengthens position as major AI hub and tech city
Amsterdam ranks among Europe’s top tech cities and is rapidly emerging as a global AI hub. The city combines strong digital infrastructure with active research networks and a vibrant startup ecosystem.
In recent years, Amsterdam has established itself as a key international tech city and a growing hub for AI innovation. Homegrown companies like Adyen and WeTransfer originated here, and today, over 450 multinationals—including Tesla, Miele X and Netflix—have their European or global headquarters in the city. Combining strong digital infrastructure with supportive policies and a thriving research and business ecosystem, Amsterdam functions as a ‘living lab’ for AI solutions.
Microsoft opened its AI research lab in Amsterdam in 2021, following the Dutch government’s 2019 Strategic Action Plan for AI. Other companies such as ABB, Brain Corp and Wonderkind have since relocated to the city. AI technologies are increasingly applied across sectors—from mobility and sustainability to healthcare and agritech—contributing to socially impactful innovation.
Amsterdam boasts world-class digital infrastructure, including AMS-IX and NL-IX, with 98% high-speed broadband coverage and 99% 4G availability. In DHL’s Global Connectedness Report 2024, the Netherlands ranked second globally. National strategies like the Dutch Digitalization Strategy are driving long-term investment and innovation across sectors.
The city also attracts high-profile tech and AI events. It has hosted the International Broadcasting Convention for over 30 years and is home to major conferences like TNW, Devworld, World Summit AI, and Mozfest. Amsterdam provides excellent venues and draws a wide audience of decision-makers, investors, and researchers from around the globe.
The Amsterdam Convention Bureau supports the organisation of impactful conferences and meetings, connecting organisers with relevant stakeholders—from startups to large corporations—and assisting in finding suitable venues and partners. Their services are independent and offered free of charge.
